About the Village

Settled in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, this village is centrally located (20 km from the tehsil and 100 km from the district headquarters). Its famously fertile terrain underpinned centuries of traditional farming, supporting a stable, permanent agricultural population.

Heritage of Mahal Iteliya Raja

The village of Iteliya, nestled within the Princely State of Jigni, began as fertile agricultural land. Recognizing its potential, the reigning King decreed the construction of a royal residence (Mahal) and dedicated facilities to house his prized livestock  creating a centralized settlement for his farmers. The old palace whispers tales of Holi colors, Diwali lights, and royal rhythms. Once a haven for laborers and stables during harvests, it transformed into a festive hub – guests arrived, drums beat, and the village bloomed. Over time, the palace’s magic stuck, naming the settlement Iteliya Raja, a local gem where tradition meets cheer.

Story of Jigni

Historically known as Jigni (or Jigini), this former princely state was an important component of the Bundelkhand region. Famed for its strategic position near the confluence of the Dhasan and Betwa rivers, the territory was encompassed by what are now the Hamirpur and Jhansi districts. Despite its modest population of around 4,297 people in 1901, Jigni was a distinct and recognized entity in the political geography of the time.
